Cloud Accounting Software: 4 Lessons from Star Trek’s Mr. Spock

Cloud Accounting Software: 4 Lessons from Star Trek’s Mr. Spock

Cloud accounting software solutionOne of the fastest growing trend among businesses today is the adoption of cloud accounting software or cloud ERP software. The affordability and rapid deployment of cloud solutions are an attractive offering for those businesses who need to streamline operations and get up to speed with the competition. Years ago, cloud accounting software, the ability to pull data from the cloud, may have been considered too futuristic to be a reality - much like Star Trek’s “beam me up” science fiction technology. What lessons can be learned from science fiction on cloud technology. Mr. Spock  has some memorable  one-liners that are timeless and relevant to cloud accounting software. Let’s see what words of Vulcan wisdom Mr. Spock has to share when it comes to cloud accounting software and the overall world of enterprise resource planning (ERP) solutions.

Cloud Accounting Software: 4 Lessons from Mr. Spock

1) "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one."

This line actually comes in part from the 1982  classic movie "The Wrath of Khan." In a way, this quote describes cloud ERP software wonderfully. The big attraction to the cloud is it’s ability to connect disparate parts of business operations under one umbrella program. If data is left outside the system or managed manually, then it will not be as effective as when integrated together. In the past, some companies using legacy ERP solutions may have had only a small number of departments and users covered by the business software programs. When data is not integrated, precious time and resources are spent making sense of your business. With the cloud, however, it is easier than ever to extend the reach of the benefits of ERP to everyone, thus ensuring that the entire business solution meets the needs of everyone.

2) "It is highly illogical not to have rules and guidelines. Without them, there would be chaos and disorder."

Spock always served as the yin to Captain James T. Kirk's yang, functioning as a voice of thoughtfulness and caution. While this sometimes made Spock seem like a buzzkill or Debbie Downer, he nonetheless served an important role on the Enterprise as a result. Similarly, every cloud ERP software implementation should be accompanied by rules and standardized procedures governing its usage. If ERP is to serve as a common point among disparate units within the business, then everyone needs to be on the same page regarding how it's utilized and updated. Rules ensure that this happens all the time, allowing the cloud ERP software to remain useful and yield a quality ROI for as long as possible.

3) "Live long and prosper."

Perhaps no quote typifies Spock quite like this one, as you probably have a picture of the Vulcan hand salute in your head right now as you read this. Once businesses implement cloud ERP software and see what it can do for them, they will be saying this too. No matter the industry or the size of the organization, ERP can be a huge boon for operations for years to come. Because of its unifying nature and its ability to help spur data-driven decision-making, Mark Jeffery, research director of technology initiatives at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, even so far as to tell ITTechNewsDaily that "ERP is like the nervous system for a business." This is no small praise, and it shows why so many businesses with cloud ERP software today will wonder what they ever did without it.

4) "This is highly illogical."

We don't think Spock would ever actually utter this about cloud ERP software, but he probably would say this to someone who thinks it is not right for them. Many companies may think that because their organization is too small, the cost is too high, it will be too hard to train everyone on how to use it, or some other excuse. However, upon closer inspection, none of these so-called reasons stand up to muster, especially now that cloud ERP software dominates the ERP market. With the cloud, it is more cost-effective than ever before to implement ERP, ensuring that organizations of all sizes can leverage it. Plus, companies nowadays have a plethora of options to turn to should anyone in the organization need help with any element of the program. Thanks to these developments, businesses today now have no excuse to not adopt cloud ERP software and reap its myriad benefits.

Even if you are not a fan of "Star Trek", Spock's quotes here in relation to cloud ERP software have hopefully shown you the light. Cloud ERP software brings enormous benefits for any company, and now is the perfect time to implement it. An investment in ERP is one that is worth the effort of your businesses is reaching for the stars.
