"We wouldn't upgrade as often as we should, and we would eventually recognize that we were behind the curve and lacking the tools we needed.

While there is still some hesitation over adopting the cloud, the Aberdeen Group noted that from 2011 to 2012, there was a 53 percent increase in software-as-a-service integration within small businesses, driving significant growth in cloud-based ERP. As the willingness to factor on-premise solutions continues to decrease, interest in SaaS ERP systems is rising rapidly. This is due to the functionality and ease of use that the cloud ERP solution is able to provide.

"It does not matter if the solution is affordable, can be implemented quickly and has the features that can support the business if employees cannot actually use it," according to the report. "Employee adoption is absolutely essential to attaining the full benefits of ERP."
