Manufacturing on the rise in the U.S. and not every manufacturing ERP system has the robust functionality to accommodate such growth. If you are in the manufacturing industry, you probably heard about the positive outlook for manufacturers in the U.S. News from all over the country including NBC News, Bloomberg Business, and Washington Reuters are reporting increases in onshore manufacturing activity. The Institute for Supply Management's manufacturing index rose slightly in May to a reading of 52.8%, from 51.5% in April. That marginally topped the Market Watch-compiled economist survey for a reading of 51.8%, on a scale where any reading over 50% indicates expansion. The new orders component rose 2.3 points to 55.8%, and the employment index also improved. This is very compelling because this is the highest index seen since 2013. So why is this is the most substantial rise in almost two years? Emerging is a manufacturing industry enormously changed than that of the last century; with the andvances with technology and manufacturing ERP software, it’s highly productive, producing sophisticated products through technology intensive manufacturing processes.
A new survey by Boston Consulting Group found that 16 percent of American manufacturing executives say they’re already bringing production back home from China. That’s up from 13 percent a year ago. Twenty percent said they would consider doing so in the near future. Another indicator that this may be a positive trend for the manufacturing industry is the Infor Service Management's new order index report. The new order report gained almost 5 points in April, signaling that manufacturing may see improved activity throughout the remainder of the year.
Our economy is recovering at a steady pace and manufacturers are finally starting to see that interpreted into increased orders and activity. The last 30 years in the U.S. saw a 40% decline in manufacturing employment and 8 million jobs were lost to a changing manufacturing industry, while output more than doubled. Now the country is in the midst of a gaining ground towards domestic production.
As this exciting development continues, will manufacturers begin to have the discussion regarding their current ERP software, processes, and hiring more skilled labor? It's a conversation that may begin in the immediate future, and one that will certainly have to be addressed. New technologies such as Infor Ming.le will help manufacturers entice the next generation of talent, through software that's fresh, modern and familiar - and highly productive as well as collaborative.
While this manufacturing revolution is in its initial phase, both new job creation and reshoring to the U.S. have slowly risen over the last few years. Since 2010, an estimated 700,000 jobs have been added in U.S. manufacturing, and of course, research suggests that many large producers are planning on bringing production back to the U.S.
Perhaps it is time to dream a little. Imagine processes streamlined, communication made simple, and critical business decisions made with up to the minute information.
Infor has released an update (called 10x) to its SyteLine ERP Software that will carry users to the next level of manufacturing. In a research note, Peter Goldmacher, an analyst with Cowen and Co., said the company’s “massive investments” in its user interface have served to “materially close the gap between enterprise and consumer software usability.” He added that “Infor is coming to market with the right product at exactly the right time.”
The Infor Syteline ERP 10x update boasts a technology stack that includes:
